My friends and I have been talking about building this deck on their house for several years. They’ve helped out a bunch on our house whenever we needed extra help , so it feels nice to be able to repay that labor. I haven’t worked on a deck in years, and this is the first one I’ve ever built where I was in charge. I’m proud of the results.
It’s been hot as balls, I’m badly sunburned on my upper arms, and it rained on us multiple times, but dagnabit we got that sumbitch done! The friend I built it with (his house) is a lot of fun to work with. He has no carpentry training, but he’s good with tools and asks good questions, and he picks things up quickly.

Are the two levels boards parallel?

Thanks!
The layout worked out really nicely. Filled in that area between the driveway and the basement window perfectly.
As for a cold one, I'm on it :)

Damn that’s beautiful. Post up a picture when it gets stained please.

I like the unique design.
If you post it to Reddits r/diy they’ll tell you all 300 things you did wrong.
Looks killer though.

Thanks. I'm not sure if he's going to stain it, or just seal it.

Thank you.
I don’t do Reddit. Except for the Just Rolled into the Shop roundup that Urambotauro posts on Sundays, of course.

Looks good. I see you've got your one-inch nosing going on. I have another set of steps to build for the same friend.

I like the design too. Did he design it or you? Do you have any in-progress pics?

Thank you. I designed it. I only took one in progress pic.

That looks really good. Answers all my questions. Did you connect it to the house at all? What kind of lumber is that? Is it treated?

Is the lower course sitting on the ground?

The long stair is on three concrete pads, dug and poured after that picture was taken . The back of it is also tied into the ribbon. The small angled part of the stair is tied into the deck frame on the back and sides, and the front edge is resting on the driveway.

I never use anything but treated lumber outside. I hate that plastic decking, it looks weird and gets hot in the sun. Cedar may be “rot resistant,” but it costs a fortune and will still be rotten in 10-12 years. I don’t know if you can still get redwood in California, but it’s very rare around here, usually special order only, and may as well be made of solid gold.

Oh, and yes, we did tie into the house. The back ribbon is bearing on a whole bunch of tapcons.
